这首歌成于1961年,当年美国只是极其有限的介入越战,但美国的民权运动却是进行得如火如荼。歌词第一句,罔上大部分人搞错了!当年美国黑人,不论年龄常被白种人贬称之为boy,(如果多留意,就会发现时至今日,美国还有大量的黑人喜欢用man这一词)故此第一句应该是反种族歧视之词,与什么男子汉、磨练等无关。第二句出现的white dove应该源出于希伯来圣经·创世纪中诺亚方舟的故事。(我这样推测,是因为作词人是犹太裔人。)诺亚在方舟上一次又一次放出鸽子,每次鸽子都飞回方舟,到最后一次放出鸽子,这次牠便不再回方舟了;这象征洪水已经散去。因此歌词的第二句是喻人类的灾难,要到那年那月才可以成为过去。
犹太人说话很多时以反问形式去回答问题,这是这首歌的特色。歌词除了首两句外,其它的虽有隐喻,但颇为明显,只要参照当年的时代背景,就不难明白。
